The path from classical antiquity to modern times, opened by a dramatic rush to Kleist and his female character, Penthesile, who similarly has to face a world that has gone off the rails and is tragically dying because of it. The story of Quintus about the history of the Amazon and the encounter of Penthesile and the Greek demigod Achilles becomes the basis of a dramatic discussion of gender identity, femininity, and the struggle within political responsibility.
The play aims to move the conflict between Penthesile and its Amazon state into the present. The stage is an art ‘lab’ that asks questions about two angry lovers,
Penthesilea and Achilles in up-to-date pictures. The Penthesilea and the Amazon are a symbol of self-affirmation against male authority and the will to submit to a destructive system, but instead break rigid systems with courage, fighting spirit, and fearless emotionality.
Strongly expressed and physically, with choral excerpts inspired by Greek tragedy, archaic instrumental and original tails, video projections reflecting the heroic emotional landscape,
This production deals with questions of legitimacy and necessity of political action and strives for vivid communication with the myths of antiquity.
