The play, which sold out at all festival performances, won the Dublin Film Festival, was also a surprising success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was the first Irish production to receive the Edinburgh Fringe Festival's highest honor, the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award (2009). Elaine Murphy, like Irish playwright Conor McPherson, used monologue in My Love, three interconnected and interwoven monologues told by three members of the same family - grandmother Rosa, daughter Lydia and granddaughter Neli. The monologue narratives of women from three generations merge into a lively, witty and touching personal confessional story of love, loss, loneliness and alienation in the modern world.

All three women are experiencing an emotional crisis, struggling with their problems and the loneliness they feel in the absence of their men. Elaine Murphy described her play as "a mess of all the women she has encountered: working, not overly wealthy, not poor ... women like us who struggle." In the play My Love, she managed to stage an ordinary, small, interesting, surprising and witty life to touch us. Love and death, loneliness, abandonment, aging, difficult motherhood and unwanted motherhood are the main themes of the surprising and witty story of three women from the same family. Betrayals, difficulties, sufferings and disappointments are interwoven with unexpectedly happy and comical life situations that provoke tears and laughter.
